Prepaid meters let tenants pay for their electricity upfront, so landlords never have to chase unpaid bills. Here’s how the whole process works, from buying a token to the landlord getting paid.
1. The tenant buys a token
The tenant goes to a shop, such as an Engen or Sasol garage, and asks for a prepaid electricity token. They give the cashier their meter number and the amount they want to buy.
2. The token is generated
The shop sends the request to UNIPIN, which generates a token for the requested amount and sends it back. The tenant receives the token on their slip.
3. The landlord gets paid
The money the tenant paid goes into our account. At the end of each month, we pay it over to the landlord’s account.
4. The tenant loads the token
The tenant punches the token into their meter. The meter is updated with a fixed amount of electricity, which it releases as it’s used. When it runs out, the tenant simply buys another token.
